Configuring a RAID volume on Proxmox 4.3

I was trying to install proxmox 4.3 on my server recently and stumbled on that pretty common problem with software RAID ; You cannot configure it directly during the installation process.

To make this new volume usable, we have to go through 3 steps :

  1. We have to create a raid device
  2. We must create a valid partition
  3. And finally create a volume group

Technically, we need first to install mdadm :

apt install mdadm -y

The, in my situation, I will create a RAID 1 for 2 disks :

mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=mirror --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc

And it’s important to save your mdam configuration :

mdadm --detail --scan >> /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

/dev/md0 will be your new RAID device.

Then you will have to create a new partition on this RAID device :

mkfs -t xfs -f /dev/md0

Just then follow the instructions and finally do these 2 operations :

pvcreate /dev/md0
vgcreate "main-storage_or_whatever_u_want" /dev/md0

And finally add this new raid array in your storage section in Proxmox(just remember to add it as a lvm volume).
